INSPECTION GUIDE

Hail Damage Roof
Inspection Checklist

Everything roofing contractors need to document hail damage properly — from ground inspection through supplement-ready reporting.

Before You Climb

  • Check hail size report (NOAA Storm Data or Verisk) for the event date
  • Note roof age and shingle type from permit records or homeowner
  • Photograph the street, address marker, and all four elevations before climbing
  • Check gutters and downspouts at ground level first — most obvious hail indicators

On the Roof — Shingles

  • Mark hail hits per 10 sq ft in test squares on each slope
  • Check for granule loss exposing dark asphalt mat beneath
  • Press on suspected hits — functional damage feels soft/spongy
  • Check ridge cap shingles (often worst impact area)
  • Check hip and valley shingles for bruising patterns
  • Document hits with close-up photos next to a measuring tape or coin

Flashings & Penetrations

  • Inspect step flashings at all wall intersections
  • Check pipe boot flashings for impact dents and cracks
  • Inspect skylight frames and curbing for hail divots
  • Check chimney lead flashing for visible impact marks
  • Photograph all penetrations with and without hail marks

Ancillary Items

  • Inspect all gutters and downspouts for divots (photograph every section)
  • Check window screens and sills for impact — great supplemental evidence
  • Inspect A/C fins and unit casing for hail patterning
  • Check painted wood trim and fascia for paint chipping from hail
  • Inspect any metal vents or ridge vents for impact dents

Documentation for Supplement

  • Total hail hit count per slope (use consistent test squares)
  • Photograph hits with and without chalk circles for adjuster review
  • Collect hail size confirmation: NOAA report, neighbor photos, local news
  • Note any pre-existing damage and exclude from claim documentation
  • Record manufacturer's functional damage definition for your shingle type
